How much is a Billion?

A Billion!  Here is some thought provoking information.

The next time you hear the word Billion used in a casual manner, just consider the following:

If ten times ten equals a hundred and ten times a hundred equals a thousand and a hundred times a thousand equals a hundred thousand and a thousand times a thousand equals a million, it follows that a million times a million equals a billion.  That is one with twelve zeros behind it.

Kill all the lawyers, kill them all tonight.

Way back in 2005, a well known Internet auction company bought a piece of technology that allows people to contact other people all over the world.  The company that the software was purchased from is now trying to cancel the license that the technology uses.  The auction company is eBay, the company that they purchased the technology from is Joltid and the technology is Skype.  Should the cancellation be successful, then the Skype service will be shut down permanently.

The fate of many marriages is hanging in the balance

So the looks are better than your mate, she appears to be prettier. Her body is perfect. She never says no. She is always available.

Does this sound familiar?

We are told now that it is “un-cool” to worry too much about pornography. It is watched by everyone, relax, what is the problem?

I don’t think that the average partner will agree. The watching of porn creates a very interesting state of affairs. What does the modern couple do? Is the partner forgiven or is the partner thrown out?

The Five Elements

Posted by EgbertFly in Untagged

According to Buddhism there are five elements, they are Wind, Water, Earth, Fire and Void or Sky (Sometimes known as Heaven).  In Japanese they are known as Fu or Kaze (Wind), Sui or Mizo (Water), Chi or Tuschi (Earth), Ho, Ka or Hi (Fire) and Ku (Void).

Google has newly announced an operating system.  Rumours of a fabled Gobuntu have been around for years.  I have had the pleasure of working with an earlier version a few years ago.  But now we have Google Chrome operating system.  It is an operating system that will transform net books and other under resourced computers.  At the end of the day the operating system is a small, quick-booting platform to run a browser from.  From there access to Google applications and other web services is available.  If you have a net book, it already has a browser, so why load a new operating system?  What can Chrome possibly do for you and your net book?  What element will benefit you the most?

So who was the first person on the moon?

It appears that it was not Neil Armstrong that was the first person on the moon, it was in fact Tintin.  Apparently he landed there in 1953 already.  He took off with a reluctant Captain Haddock from the Sprodj Atomic Research Centre in the fictitious Balkan country of Syldavia in Eastern Europe.

Jupiter took a bullet for us

Posted by EgbertFly in Untagged

On July 21 2009 an amateur astronomer spotted the mark an object, most likely a comet, made on the surface of Jupiter.  The object ploughed through the clouds that cover Jupiter, and no-one saw it coming.  The object threw up debris and left a mark the size of the Pacific Ocean.  This is the second time that Jupiter has taken a blow for us here on Earth.  Almost fifteen years ago, another report told of comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 that fell apart and left large planet sized marks that are still visible.

Windows XP to Windows 7: Get ready for a fight.

So what is Microsoft thinking?  The call to leave Windows XP users with no clear upgrade path to Windows 7 is perhaps the only mistake in a successful product campaign.

There is a precedent for Microsoft to leave users from previous generation operating systems high and dry.  When XP shipped, Windows 3.1, and Windows 95 customers were left out in the cold. When Vista shipped in January 2007, XP had multiple paths, but Windows 2000 (and older OS's) were left out in the cold.

Seacom, schmeecom

So the Seacom cable is finally live. Data will be pouring in and out from a little know place on the Natal coast called Mtinzini. It’s a lovely place, I have been there. Lovely beach, have to get to it on foot, no roads to the beach. Great attitude. Best part is that the Sharks are not the team of choice in this little Natal hamlet.

But how does it affect the Seacom cable and you and me as the user who is supposed to benefit from Seacom?

Maggie had the right idea

I love blogging.  It gives me the right to be able to speak my mind.

So yet another strike looms.  Municipalities are set to be crippled as labourers warn of a shutdown of services.  And even better, we as the public have been asked not to pay our bills at any of the municipal departments, mainly because no-one will be there to accept our money.

Margaret Hilda Thatcher in 1983 had the right idea.  The power that trade unions have must be reduced.  She effectively managed to destroy the power that they had for almost a generation.
