This past decade has challenged many people in South Africa and around the world with through various emotional events. The outspoken Julius Malema, President Zuma's acquittal, Shabir Shaik's release from prison and the murders of Lolly Jackson and Eugene Terblanche, the 9-11, wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the Tsunami, the deepest recession since the Great Depression, the sacking of President Mbeki and the first African-American President. Many changes happened in the area of divorce and Family Law as well. The following, in no particular order, are my 10 top divorce and family law related issues since 2000:

I purchased the mail and Guardian last week to provide some good newspaper reading during the festive period when, quite frankly, journalism lowers its content to zero.

Review : The girl who kicked the hornet's nest

All good things  come to an end, The girl who kicked the hornets nest is the last film in the trilogy that follows the story of Lisbeth and her dodgy family secrets and Mikael search for trueth. Although this one is less edgy than the first two,it wraps the series quite nicely and has it's own charms. From the old boy spy network, to its intellectual mind fights between the prosecution and Lisbeth,to debate on what limits should be taken in pursuing journalistic trueth.

OR Tambo Parking just got a lot more intelligent

Parking at OR Tambo was for many years the most frustrating part of the journey. Lack of bays, long walks often getting wet as you dashed along carrying luggage because there was no trolley available were common events for me. lets not forget the expense of the parking and often geting change in small denomination coins to further frustrate the unpleasant experience.

Review : Tron Legacy

Posted by Paralyzer in review Tron Legacy , jeff bridges , CGI truimph

Paralyzer

If you a big gcomputer/techno geek ,you probably know off or have seen the original Tron movie that came out in the 80’s that tried to merge CGI and 2D images like it had never been done before .By taking the computer world of arcades and merging them with the world of cinema, resulting in a big cult following and not so good returns at the box office. Over twenty years later we have a sequel with even more outstanding visual effects but unlike the original Tron now there’s other movies to compare the sequel to such as the Matrix and this sequel seems to loose steam half way ,making the movie just bearable than an instant classic, but don’t be surprised if a sequel come s through though.

'SPUD' - The movie's music

Posted by Phoenix Benedict in Untagged

Phoenix Benedict

After being rapidly pulled back into the early 90's with synth sounds and bouncing bass drum beats, one expects the 'Spud' milieu to be rive with a 'Miami Vice' pop sound. Yet, the music score alternates between synth pop soundscapes and mainly (acoustic sounding) piano and strings textures that cascade from one harmonic progression to the next, without actually creating an audio identity marker, an audio brand for the film. The score succeeds in creating moodscapes in sync with the unfolding on-screen narrative, yet for me it lacks a convincing identity, a theme tune, an audio brand. Think of Harry Potter with its signature tune, or Intel without it's bell-like 'ping ping ping pong'. Each audio-visual commodity benefits greatly from an audio touch stone that remains in the audiences mind long after they have finished watching the movie. Also, when this signature theme is heard again it conjures up the brand itself, engraving it - as it were - into the mind.

Except for Mango Groove's contribution, one can scarcely associate a specific sound to the movie. Mr Jordan is an effective songwriter, which is also evident in his original and fabulously melodious 'Oliver Twist' songs, used in 'Spud' as part of the narrative. Yet, I am disappointed with the lack of convincing and memorable music scoring outside of the musical's moments. A good songwriter does not by it's very nature make a good film composer. For me this is a point in case.

Mr Jordan is known for his commercial success with a number of radio hits, tv show appearances as well as being the co-creator of the children CD range 'Beautiful Creatures'.

Hopefully South African film directors will become increasingly critical and discerning about the art of film scoring as well as the definitions of good and bad film scoring, in order to perpetuate excellence in audio branding as well as visual multi-media branding.

NELLY (Song: 'Just a dream') 2010

Posted by Phoenix Benedict in Untagged

Phoenix Benedict

Normally rappers and male hip-hop artists rarely ever dare to hum in a song, nevermind actually sing. Don't get me wrong: I'm very much in favor of rhythm and poetry as a culturally relevant and artistically masculine expression of art/popart. Yet, most male rappers and hip-hop artists do not sing as a matter of sub-cultural definition.

How absolutely daring and fabulously refreshing to hear a new voice, the other side of Nelly! Besides composing the catchy 'Just a dream' he also sings (the chorus on his own, no female back up support) and raps throughout the song. He sings with conviction and a melodious tone.

As unusual as it is to hear a male rapper sing, I do hope that more male rappers and hip-hop artists will grab music by the balls and actually (learn to) sing.

I have gained new respect for Nelly and am looking forward to hear more of his other (more melodious) side.
