No not the result you were thinking of!! But some fantastic results…
What an incredible weekend for sport… Around the world there was;
· ‘Our’ FIFA 2010 Soccer.
· Rugby internationals involving all the major countries; Springboks, France, Australia, England, All Blacks, Ireland, Scotland, Argentina.
· Isle of Man TT races
· Canadian F1 Grand Prix
· Le Mans 24 hr Race.
Fortunately, with multi-tasking, and a multitude of TV channels, and Internet sites, I was able to sort of (as well as any male, I would suggest) follow each one.
Unfortunately the fatalities on the Isle of Man were ‘expected’ and surely it can only be a matter of time before the land of Health & Safety bans these races, which will be a sad day, but inevitable I think.
But the unexpected result was in France at the Sarthe circuit, where Audi managed to pull off a 1-2-3 finish, which was totally unexpected. Renault looked much quicker, and their cars have been reliable recently. From the outset they seemed to dominate, to the extent that they could back off to conserve the cars, and Audi still could not catch them. But 24 hrs around Le Mans is a long, long way. The numbers for this race are astounding. A new distance record was set. The lead car completed 397 laps at an average speed of 225.228km/h. A new lap record was set at 3:19.024. Car No 9 was the winning number for the fifth time in the history of the race. Previously the number was carried to victory in 1925 (Lorraine Dietrich),1950 (Talbot Lago),1959 (Aston Martin) and last year 2009 (Peugeot). It is Audi's 9th win equalling Ferrari's total. They are in second place behind Porsche who have 16 overall wins. It's the 27th time the race has been won by a German car. It's Michelin's 19th victory so far.
