Scurrying between the intertubes and real life.

So we're gearing up for NaNoWriMo, but what shall we use to write? Try Papel! It's awesome.

I'm getting so excited about the month of insanity to come. So instead of doing the work I should have been doing, I've found some great software and started planning the novel-to-be. If you don't know what I'm talking about, read tally1302's blog.

The software I've found is called Papel and is available for free download here. And here's the good bit - it runs on Linux through Wine too. If it doesn't do it for you, try WriteMonkey, which has a snazzy progress bar that tells you if you should be writing faster.

So that's the first thing sorted - what to write on.

The second thing to consider is where to write. Well, you can write anywhere - on the loo, in bed, in your favourite coffee shop. Just get hold of a notebook and cart it around with you at all times. I like using my laptop because I'll need to type it out anyway, so it saves time, but sometimes I get ideas in the most random situations, and having somewhere to jot them down quickly is fantastic.

And now... what to write?

Well, that's up to you. I was a bit stuck for ideas until I headed over the the forums, which are really what makes this "competition" worth it. Having people cheering you on, playing word games to counter writer's block (or just procrastinate) and being able to work out plot holes with some constructive criticism, as well as the great community is my favourite part, and probably why I have yet to write all 50000 words. I got to 40000 one year though.

And the regions feature lets you find people in your area who are participating, and then you can get together for the kick-off party or the thank-goodness-it's-over party and have even more fun.

Another great thing about it is that all donations go to charity. So if you want to put some money towards helping children and adults discover the joys of language and so on, you can do so by sponsoring me via this website.

November is going to be a good month.

PS: Notice that I've said nothing about exams? Oh dear.

mysehnsucht: I couldn't get yWriter or WriteMonkey to work through wine, but yes, I've heard they're pretty good. Papel is a good alternative for a Linux user though. smilies/smiley.gif

Odd. I have a friend who is on Ubuntu who uses YWriter, which is why I suggested it. At the end of the day, whatever works for you is good smilies/smiley.gif

I also signed up. I'm now 2600 words in. Okay, I was building on an already-existing story idea, so it's not really that impressive. I can't wait for the first upload day so I can put the few words I've written up online and get my status bar off 0/50 000!

Bubblezy: That's cheating! You're only supposed to *start* writing on the 1st.

*shun*
