Server Tiering

Recently it was announced in the news that MTN had built Africa’s first tier four data centre.  The data centre is housed at a location that MTN calls the Energy Center, over the road from their corporate headquarters.

After reading the article and chatting to some of the guys from MTN, I decided to do some snooping as to what the various tiers are and what they promise to deliver.

Tier Level

Requirements

Tier One

Single non-redundant distribution path serving the IT equipment

Non-redundant capacity components

Basic site infrastructure guaranteeing 99.671% availability

Tier Two

Fulfils all Tier One requirements

Redundant site infrastructure capacity components guaranteeing 99.741% availability

Tier Three

Fulfils all Tier One and Tier Two requirements

Multiple independent distribution paths serving the IT equipment

All IT equipment must be dual-powered and fully compatible with the topology of a site's architecture

Concurrently maintainable site infrastructure guaranteeing 99.982% availability

Tier Four

Fulfils all Tier One, Tier Two and Tier Three requirements

All cooling equipment is independently dual-powered, including Cooling and Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems

Fault tolerant site infrastructure with electrical power storage and distribution facilities guaranteeing 99.995% availability

MTN have created a primary power plant that runs on methane gas that is piped in from a neighbouring country.  The power plant generates a total of two megawatts.  This enables MTN to be able to continue operations during any power outages.

The water that is used in the process will be reused to cool the entire campus as well service other functions such as flushing of toilets.  The excess heat and power generated will be used to cool the Energy Centre as well as the buildings in which the corporate headquarters are housed.

It seems to be a trend that companies will be following allowing for greener power and the opportunity to be able to place excess power back into the grid, as well remove themselves from the national grid.

Our government has made a commitment to renewable energy, and it is through private efforts that this goal will be somewhat closer.

If memory serves me right, MTN was one of the first companies to sponsor solar panel to power traffic lights when we had the power cuts a few years ago.

OutSurance was also one of them.

Clearly MTN is not playing follow the "leaders". Good for them
