RDS stands for Radio Data System.

It is a communication protocol that allows small amounts of information to be inserted in conventional FM broadcast.

Originally, if your radio was RDS enabled, here in South Africa, you would be able to see the name of the station.

The concept of RDS was started to allow you would be able to see information on your radio’s display.  You would be able to see traffic information; your radio would sync its clock and now Radio Text.

On my way home I noticed something new.  Instead of the usual station name, I was given information pertaining to the song and the artist that was playing.

RDS is a simple yet effective concept that can make some interesting changes to the way that you listen to the radio in the traffic.

I noticed the change on my radio last week Thursday, but the problem is that I do spend more time looking at the radio to see who the artist or song are, which might be a road hazard.

According to Alex J, they aren't allowed (yet) to display the traffic information (for the exact same reason, everyone will be staring at their radio instead of the road ahead).

I wonder what the criteria will be to change when traffic information is displayed on the screen of your radio.
