Sony have confirmed that the development of a future platform is already underway.
This was revealed by the company’s Executive Vice-President Masaru Kato in a conference call to investors last week. In addition to discussing research and development (R&D) costs, he affirmed that the Playstation 3 still has a “product life” as far as home equipment is concerned.
The announcement is the first official word by Sony regarding development of a next-generation platform. Sony’s explicit plans for it, however, are not as yet known.
Also mentioned by Kato was the NGP portable gaming device which is due to be released later this year.
The company has endured a tough few weeks in the wake of a security breach of the Playstation Network that compromised millions of users’ information.
Rivals Nintendo are also expected to demonstrate the successor to their own console - the Wii - at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in June this year.
