Merseystate have started a fantastic trend amongst local artists. “Give your music away for free”. In South Africa, if you sell 50 000 copies, you’ve reached Platinum. In America, that number sits at 500 000. I suppose if you calculate the division, the artist truly walks away with not much cash, so if not why not, give that music away! What fantastic marketing!
I am happy to see that they have received praise for this move, and I think I’m going to follow suit. I feel people have forgotten why they make music, and how it changes society. It is the universal language, and I am glad it is no longer silent. At the rate music is downloaded illegally, I think Merseystate have made a very good decision.
Some may argue, that they have lost revenue that they needed to make up on the recording and production on their new album. I however, think that they are doing what most musicians don’t do, which is have faith in the loyalty of South Africans to their local musicians.
I look forward to the digital craze that these boys are creating, in the music world. I am going to follow suit when it is time to release my album, as are other artists that I know.
After all, the best things in life are free!
