Ok i'm gonna come clean i'm am friggin in love with the kindle I think of it when Iie in bed at night if i had a kindle I'd show that gadget a good time. I've switched to reading a large percentage of my books on my laptop ages ago I'm working on my speed reading and the scrolly screen in Adobe's Pdf reader just makes it that much easier. The hassle of having to haul my laptop out and get it set up proves to be a collosal pain in the rear end though.
Enter Kindle the ipod for clever people. I just love how portable it is - the future is now! Well not quite now @ 5 grand i'm gonna wait it out a bit. The price will drop that's a given. The question though is will Kindle help the embattled authors by reducing the reliance on publishers or hinder them? I fear that kindle might be to books what blogs and the cult of amateur web based opions. We'll defiintely see blogs and newspaper and various other syndicated content streaming onto our Kindles in the future also there will be direct publishing where authors with no need (or audience) for print copies will be able to create and publish their own digital tomes. What is the end result? A more cluttered web. A web filled with amateur opinions. Or perhaps people will vote with there wallets and we'll see the heritage of the print media survive even if in a somewhat bastardised and unashamedly cool way.

We spend approximately 8 hours of our lives a day staring at our computer screens at work. I don't particularly want to read books off a small screen. For me, personally, I'm old school and Kindle doens't appeal to me in the slightest. Give me a paperback book or newspaper any day over the kindle. I wonder whether the number of people needing to wear gla*ses will increase, hmmm...

Unfortunately I think printed books will die out - slowly and expensively as fewer books are printed.
Just as the world's newspapers are struggling and many going under as people get their fix on the web.

Use the myDL search and look for the article on Cool-er.
It is basically the competition to the Kindle.
I am waiting for the review unit. But this will be available in SA as well. I will post the details once it is available

@journo- the kindle is the same size as a novel-so the screen isn't that small-it's exactly the same size as we're all used to reading. Also the technology is very different- they have tried really hard to simulate the look of ink on paper so it's not like staring into a glaring screen- or so I'm told.
I've also heard that a lot of newspaper publishers are considering cutting actual print copies and giving the Kindle away to subscribers because it will work out cheaper in the long run for them.
