I would stop all the problems before they start instead of trying to fix them too late.I wish I had a time machine and I could go back to the time when no one knew of other people's cultures and races. Then, I would track each "first encounter" and make sure that everyone is okay with everyone else. Like, point out the good and bad points of everyone.
This would pre-abolish things like slavery and apartheid, which we all regret and fail to understand the rationale behind it. But apart from making racist people un-racist, it would make people less sensitive. I cannot tell you *how* many forums I have read where someone ends up accusing someone else of racism for a simple joke.
Obviously, this is not just a South African dilemma. Everyone across the entire world is sensitive. Even those that do not belong to minorities are sensitive on behalf of other people. I myself complain when people say "Indian" instead of "Native American" or use generalisation like "Chinese" and "Mexican" when talking about Asian or Hispanics. There aren't any extra syllable's, why is it so much harder?
But going back in time would fix all these things. War, for one, would probably not exist. Colonisation would never have happened. Aboriginals and Native Americans wouldn't be such a small percentage of the population.
<sigh>
If only if only if only.
