RIC007GP

Do any of these names mean anything to you. Lycos, Alta Vista, Ask Jeeves, Yahoo? Yes, obviously they are all search engines which had their heyday in the 90s. Although all of them are still operating they have all lost massive market share to Google. Ask Jeeves, which was a favourite of mine in the ‘old days’ is closing shop.

When last did any of you use any of these search engines? Do any of you use any of these on a regular basis? I am guessing that the answer from most of you will be “NO!” Google has become ubiquitous, so much so that we have incorporated it into our language.“Google it” is the answer from most computer users of all ages when something needs an answer or clarification.

It is hard to imagine us even considering using another search engine despite the fact that you would probably get pretty much the same result from them. Google though has won out and consigned Ask Jeeves, which was bought in 2005 for 1.85 billion dollars, to the history pages in Wikipaedia.

So is there a Google killer lurking out there? Well I was watching a new TV programme tonight. It is a remake of the old Hawaii-5-0 updated for modern audiences. In one scene in this episode one of the characters questions another one who says “Bing it!” She whips out a Windows 7 LG Smartphone and you see her touching her way from the startup screen to Microsoft’s Bing search engine.

Now I don’t know about you, but I find it extremely unlikely that the purchase of a Windows 7 phone is going to lead to Google finding itself on the rubbish tip of Internet history. Microsoft has been trying very hard to get Bing up there with Google, but I don’t think they have been very successful. Do any of you Bing it?

Bada bing! Nope. I google everything.

I remember Web Ferret too, hated it but my dad used to love using it. I started using Google way back when. The logo still had an exclamation mark!
