There's an ad doing the rounds on radio and TV made by the SABC, proudly proclaiming something along the lines of : "90% of South Africans chose the SABC as their channel to watch the World Cup, thank you South Africa!". In a related story, I'm pretty sure 90% of South Africans can't afford DSTV, so they didn't really have a choice did they? So what exactly are you thanking them for? Then again, an ad that said: "Thank you for watching SABC as you had no other alternative!" probably wouldn't have gone down well with the guys in charge, would it?
That said, the amazing alternative DSTV can be rather sucky at times. I am fortunate enough to have the compact version, but even then it does seem rather limited. There is only one education focused channel, but if you ask me the whole experience is like one laborious brain workout. With the amount of repeats that get shown, I'm quite astounded at the ability I've acquired to memorize all the shows, so thanks DSTV, for improving my memory. I don't know or haven't seen anybody with Top TV, but with their weird option packages I can't see myself changing to them anytime soon. So is South African TV just not that grand? I haven't been overseas (and if my current financial situation stays this way, I probably never will), so I don't really have something to compare it to. An old flame of mine, when telling me about her trip to Amsterdam, told me there was a channel that played the Wedding Singer on repeat for like the whole day. Hearing stuff like that, perhaps we don't have it that bad after all.
Back to Survivor man I go. Again.

As most people who can afford DSTV will have a DVD / video recorder, the only reason for having so many repeats is to make it look like they are actually selling you a big package, when in reality almost every show is shown 4 or 5 times it seems...

. Even turning pages needed outside assistance. Maybe I should have tried downloading some ebooks onto my Tablet, as that may have been simpler. Honestly, about the only thing I could do for a while, was to work the remote (if the nurse stuffed it into the right part of the sling). But it seemed to be repeat, repeat, repeat. There were some good programmes on National Geographic, but I really hope we get some of the stunning programmes on Astronomy put together by Prof Brian Cox. What really gets to me are the huge number of adverts which sell absolute crap, especially, the many "alternative medical" approaches. Some people must be sucked in by their nonsense, but I would have hoped that there are regulations to protect the public from these scam artists. The same with some of the ridiculous programmes which try to pass off "psychic abilities" as factual. Even watching the shows one can see they have ridiculous claims, and that will be the edited versions!! Psychic abilities have been tested, and tested and tested, and in proper scientific tests it has been shown that there is no such thing as ESP.
