Every decade or so a tortured singer morphs onto the scene with music that ignites a universal, cult-like appeal. Lately it seems, these icons are almost exclusively female, having taken over from the likes of Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen – who in this author’s opinion – where the last of their gender to engender this quality.

It was the longest total lunar eclipse witnessed in 100 years and there I was wishing I had a 70K telephoto lens. But it was not to be. I had to make do with my 85mm fixed Canon (a beautiful lens for dim light photography, but not so great for this) and a 1000D Canon camera (the DSRL for wanna-be professionals). Nevertheless it could have been worse, so I thought I'd share these pics with you. 

This morning at around 3am international connectivity was lost to most South African ISPs. According to SEACOM repair work to the SEA-ME-WE 4 undersea cable was completed during the course of last night. SEACOM’s Head of Product Strategy Suveer Ramdhani sheds some light about some of the reasons why things went so badly wrong.

SEACOM posted an update on their FaceBook page this morning (around 10am) that they are expecting repairs to their undersea cable to be completed by 22:00 (UCT). Meanwhile thousands of South Africans have been without international internet connections since the weekend.  What have we learned from this fiasco? I’d say it has proven the old adage, don’t put all your eggs in one basket.

Online communities and social networking platforms like FaceBook, LinkedIn and Twitter have placed mass marketing at everyone’s fingertips. These tools can be used equally effectively to gain momentum for active consumerism.

This is my first blog at MyDL, although I have been an online journalist and blogging for pay and pleasure since 2006. As a social media and internet junkie who has been researching ways for bloggers to earn cash from their efforts, I was hugely disappointed to learn that PayPal has made an exclusive arrangement with FNB to service South African clients.
