HIV/AIDS has plagued South Africa for many years now. The infection rate is among the highest in the world. According to estimates drawn from surveys, one out of three women under age 25 are living with HIV. In 2009 a phone-based counselling centre called RedChatZone was launched to support and to give information to those living with HIV.

Imagine that you are a middle aged woman living in a township called Kamwala in Zambia. You are HIV positive, widowed and yet you have managed to rise above the odds and raise two healthy children aged ten and sixteen. You are the breadwinner and everyday you ensure that your children are well fed and taken care of. You grew up having big dreams just like anyone else. Now those dreams are not as vivid as they used to be because everyday your daughter has to give you your ARV’s and you need to use a walking stick, not because you are weak but because you have gone blind.

Last year a friend of mine helped a group of women that own a clothing business. He taught them how to use their new computers that had been donated to them by a local business. Today these women are now able to draw up income and expenditure reports on excel, create presentations to seek more funding and send as well as read emails. Now, it is very evident from this example that women who are disadvantaged can empower themselves given the opportunity and resources to do so.
