The original Santam ad was effective because it highlighted our lack of attention to the finer details ( the barman changed outfits 4 times). In true Nando's fashion, their response somewhat satirical somewhat slapstick took the mickey out of Santam by doing a "send-up" of the barman behind the counter showing how the menu changes. This enjoyed a great reponse on Youtube. Santam went one better by challenging Nandos's to donate a hearty meal to an orphanage in Observatory,Jozi.
To be specific, 62 lemon & herb 1/2 chicken with chips, 12 kiddies meals with chips & toy, 74 hot sticky puddings,74 assorted cooldrinks and 1 Portuguese salad have to be delivered by 4pm tomorrow.
What great showmanship by both brands, this tussle which is being greatly enjoyed by the masses. I'm certain that Nando's will not only oblige but use this opportunity to leverage brand position. All eyes are on 45 Urania Street, Observatory at the Johannesburg Children's Home, tomorrow.
It is the social media platforms that ensured that this "tussle" was widely broadcast through posts, blogs and tweets.
Twitter was abuzz and posts and comments on Facebook showed up the huge interest from Facebookers and tweeps.
Youtube Santam video response received 63327 views at the time of my writing this.
All in all, I wonder what Nandos response will be OR are they chicken?
