There are lies, damned lies - and statistics

No-one knows for sure who said this. Benjamin Disraeli or Mark Twain, it doesn't matter. The point is, we have a good illustration of the truth of this quotation in the current headlines.

SA's crime statistics were released yesterday. Year-on-year, the statistics for attempted murder are looking good: down 3% on last year. Hmm, based on the crime statistics published by SAP here, about 900 fewer people did not suffer this traumatic experience in the past year.

On the other hand, actual murders are up 2.5%. Out of the 900 who should be greatly relieved that they did not suffer a life-threatening attack, 495 are no longer with us. They were successfully murdered. Our criminals are getting better at what they do.
