Recently in the forum on mybroadband (www.mybroadband.co.za) there was a question that caught my eye. It said what is Cloud Computing and How can it help me?

It sparked in me that not everyone knows. Yes there were some silly replies and some not so silly so I added my comments as below. I like helping peopole so I kept it simple.

Cloud computing provides businesses with a service based on the number of users. It's big advantage is that you should only be paying for the number of people using it. So for instance if you are a small business with say 5 staff using the cloud application then you only pay for those 5 people. As your business grows then you increase the licenses and then vice versa if it should contract then you can decrease the licenses.
Other benefits are that it is accessed through the web so you could easily access the information as you travel round the planet.
For a small business it also means that you do not need to purchase hardware or an elaborate infrastructure and probably most importantly the cloud service provider would also backup your information. The cloud application could be run in house as well for large applications in which case it is a private cloud or it could be a service offered to many in which case it is a public cloud. Don't worry about people having access to your information it is well protected and secure. That should enable you to talk knowledgeably or nod knowingly round the Braam this weekend. Welcome!

Hey Tim, welcome to myDL!

Thank you for explaining the cloud. It seems many people are still a bit sceptical about using it for one of the very reasons you touched on: privacy and security. What many people don't realise is that they are already making use of the cloud when they're using apps like Dropbox. I love how it provides you with access to docs and media from anywhere.

Thanks again and looking forward to reading more from you!

Thanks Redsaid

Glad I was able to help. You are right of course we are using Cloud computing in a number of ways without knowing it. Dropbox is one, skydrive and google docs and iCLoud are all examples. I know in the next few weeks of a South African Company that will release a cloud version of its software that will open up its award winning software to a whole new market of smaller users. These are the users that may not be able to afford the whole infrastructure or did not want the management problem that a seld hosted solution can bring. Anywho happy computing cloud or otherwise
