South Africans are one (if not the ONLY) of the nations on earth that is able to take tragedies/scandals/politically charged events and inject satire and great humour into it!
By the way: a belated welcome to myDL, futuresoul!
Tx for the welcoming redsaid. I'm always having an opinion when it comes to politics/religion and the arts.
Guardian Angel will probably think I'm attacking her by now as I've been responding to her 'political' blogs.
The thing is...I'm actually glad South Africans are they way they are. I think it means we're off to a great start. I'm sure countries like America started off where we are today. Look at how they value freedom of speech?
Besides that, what are we doing about our tragedy?
Just a thought.
Awesome! It's wonderful to have yet another opinionated, passionate blogger on board!
I'm also glad that Saffas are engaging in so much talk about everything. Even if the levels sometimes escalate to shouting. I lived in the States for almost a decade, and trust me, many people there don't understand that freedom of speech means that you allow everyone to have their say and be entitled to their opinion, even if you vehemently disagree with them. An example of this: Post 9/11, when the US sent the troops to invade Afghanistan and Iraq, many people thought that those who were speaking out against Bush's decision to start a war were AGAINST the troops. (Wasn't true, of course.) It is this same mentality that lets many people mistakenly think that you automatically agree with others if you allow them the chance to have their say.
True freedom of speech is exactly this: "I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it", a famous quote widely attributed to Voltaire.
As for what we are doing about our tragedies in South Africa? Why, we make jokes about it of course! Okay, not JUST that (there are, after all, a lot of people doing a lot of good work out there to fight crime, poverty, etc.), but I absolutely love this very uniquely South African ability to make fun of and laugh at ourselves!
relax future soul hahahaha, i dont take any opinion personally...i love creating debates, be they loud or not, in agreement or not....
