Maybe i have missed the boat, but i just dont see the point of twitter.  So many of my buddies love it and follow everybody  from the dustbin guy to Will Smith.

They also say it is brilliant to promote your business, but if nobody can respond, how does it work.  Please all of you twitter goonies, please give me some help here because if it is a media type that really does work, i think i need a little help to get me to see where i am going wrong.

HELP!!!!

Depends...

Twitter has become an incredible portal for literally creating your own viral message, that could potentially reach over 555 MILLION PEOPLE... Let that thought slowly sink in. 555 MILLION. One more time, 555 MILLION.

You may just use it for a laugh, to read some of the funniest and freely distributed content on the internet. Or maybe you have a business you are starting and want to build a client/fan/user base to send your latest specials as they happen, which could lead to some of your clientfanusers spreading the word to their followers, who in turn tell their followers and before you know it... You are the ruler of the universe and everyone knows the name of "Danny's Dildo Emporium".

It is definitely daunting to look at initially, but a little reading and a little first hand experience and you'll be tweeting like a twat in no time :)

GOOD LUCK!

Twitter

Twitter does have a bit of a learning curve when you first start out. And it takes a while to get a grasp on what works as a tweet and what doesn't.

Don't expect to gain a massive amount of followers in a few weeks or months even. I've been actively using Twitter for just over a year now and I have only gone past a 1000 followers in the past month. Followers is not what Twitter is about.

I originally only started using it to punt my blog. No I use it for networking, marketing, as a news source and more. You can have a look at my profile if you want: https://twitter.com/gevaaalikdotcom

Enjoy man. Who knows how long Twitter will last.

radio station

Twitter is like being able to have a voice on a radio station whilst also being able to listen to your own favourite stations! i first started following celebrities, but now my feed is clean and as sharp as a whistle!

Noise

tweeting is much ado about nothing except creating more digital noise.

And reaching 555 million is a marketing ideal at best.

Use it properly

Twitter is not a tool to promote your business. If people see that all you do is tweet about how awesome your business is, chances are they won't follow you.

Also, if you are following celebrities, then in my opinion, you are wasting its full potential.

Personally, I use it to connect and follow people within the industry I am in. I follow experts, well-respected journos and smart/intelligent folks. People who share interesting bits of information, and this is the important part - on subjects I want to know more about.

People who use Twitter like IM irritate the hell out of me. I also don't like reading personal conversations between people. That's not what my feed is for. So I unfollow a lot if someone does something to annoy me. Like Foursquare tweets. As a rule, I unfollow. I don't want to know when you fill petrol or when you do grocery shopping.

I also don't like when people retweet others all the time. I want to see what they have to say, original stuff and opinions on what is current.

Sjoe, I sound like the fussiest person ever :p

What Charmed said

Totally agree with all you said Charmed, except the problem with Twitter is its definitely an "every man/woman/other for themselves". While trying to figure out the whole Twitter thing I have tried numerous different methods of gaining/keeping followers, but what i have found the most effective is you do indeed have to retweet... If no one in the world retweeted the whole point of Twitter would be null and void. You retweet someone in the hopes that they will do the same to you. If you do not, you better pray your content is good enough and your followers are faithful enough to retweet anyway

retweet

No, I mean don't have a twitter account if ALL your tweets are retweets of others with nothing original on your stream.

Don't get me wrong, I retweet others, but on a weekly average, less than 5 times a week.

I also prefer retweeting with my own comment. But as a whole, I like more original tweets from a person than retweets of other.

RE: tweet

Oh right yea then again agreed :) Nothing worse than arriving on someones timeline and having to scroll 457 times before you find even one original tweet.

Learning Curve

Thanks guys...really appreciate the input. Hell, believe it or not but i do have a twitter account, but have never really known what to do with it - and i am a damn creative person - i think i am possibly taking a bit of all of your advice and start playing around with. I wont hold my breath initially as i am sure it is a medium that requires not only connectivity to those who know you but even more importantly "what you tweet"that would keep them interested. Lets spend a little time on the week-end and when i come unstuck i am going to pull in all your resources for advice. I love technology but it is coming at us so fast and furiously one doesnt know what to use first or try out, and just when you get it, something else pops its little techno head in...have an awesome night all and thanks for the comments and help
