in Digital Blogs

Last week an electricity cut all day made me very uneasy as I was not able to Blog , Tweet, BBM  or Whatsapp unless it as very important in attempt to save my battery life.

However my plan of action didnt last too long as i felt the need to use my phone for the numerous tasks i use it for normally. This lead to the phone dying by midday , the electricity was only due to come back on at 4PM. I then decided to read for abit then decided to spend quality time chatting with my mum and gran for about 2 hours .

During this bonding session I realised ahhh my laptop was still fully charged from the night before. So with a smile as big as a Cheshire cat i went off to get my laptop to charge my phone and my external hard drive. I then decided to to clean up my hard drive , put on a playlist and charge my phone at the same time. Wow such great multitasking skills us women have.

And then there was light Eureka , i could put my phone to charge properly and both my netbook and laptop. However it later dawned on me that evening how I am totally addicted to this digital era and how the art of conversation has become a dying art.

Its so totally evident as people can no longer hold a decent conversation. Even the learners of today write in text language and no longer use proper English... Yes I am addicted to the digital age but i can hold a conversation and I use proper English when I write.Presses the ESC KEY to end ....

Digital caveman

Cool post AznHun. Got me thinking.

Lets just say the power going out and digital withdrawal is an old experience for someone who has been joined at the fingers to a computer since the 80's. I am aware that this addiction has gotten worse over the last 25 years and that, as you are, I am fairly much addicted to my technology.

Years ago (somewhere in the 90s), during one such incident, I was staring at the wall and shivering, and I made a decision. I could not allow myself to fall apart ever time the power went down. In defense I decided to learn a lot of caveman skills, like making a fire with two sticks, so that when the nuclear (or zombie) apocalypse comes, I will still be able to function. Part of my training involved playing the entire Fallout series.

Seriously though, when the power goes out I have a good laugh at the people standing aimlessly at the dead ATM in the sure knowledge that I have "ruggedized" myself. I can make a fire with a flint, I know which mushrooms I can eat, I can skin a buck, kill a chicken, and have spent enough time in the great outdoors to find my way around. If all else fails, I know how to read a real book(you turn the pages with your fingers)

This contrary to my teen years when I looked like Casper and couldn't be moved from a screen with a crowbar.

Balance in all things, I'm ready for the apocalypse (or Eskoms next load shedding exercise)and I have chased my teen sons outdoors enough that they are also trained.

Bring it on ...

retraining

hey there awesome response ......maybe we do need to retrain our mindset as to the use of technology. The art of reading is an awesome skill/hobby however many now use ebooks and kindle readers instead the experience the feel of turning pages or the smell of a new book

nice one AznHun

ive managed to hook up a UPS @home to give me approx 6hours of working time should Eskom decide to play hardball. even tho its only desktops that Ive got hooked up, I aim to install a UPS that gives me 220V outlet power for exactly that crucial charges for my Nokia & Blackberrys, my Sony cameras and my Tablet plus who knows what other paraphenalia. I can cook on a fire, dont need 2 bath(sic), light a candle and drink warm beer! but i sure need my stuff charged and good2Go! nice one AznHun!
