FPB (Film & Publications Board) Turns a Blind Eye to Porn Online

The FPB recently had their say during the TopTV porn saga and strongly opposed the possibility of porn on TV with the usual moral arguments.

For those that do not know, the FPB is responsible for imposing age restrictions on films and no film is allowed to be legally sold in South Africa unless they have viewed it and given it a rating. The FPB is also responsible for giving licenses to those wanting to sell / rent or distribute films, including pornography.

Given how vocal the FPB has been in media regarding porn, I decided to have a look online and see how strictly they enforce the law.

My first stop was Adult World (www.adultworld.co.za) and within two clicks I found myself browsing the adult DVD section on their website. With titles like Gag n Shag, I doubt these are movies of the educational type...although it would depend on what you deem educational.....there is even a Midget porn section...WTF?!!

The FPB states that it is illegal to sell adult DVD's online in South Africa simply due to the fact that there is no sure way to control that the buyer is over 18 years of age.

I emailed the FPB and asked them why Adult World was allowed to sell DVD's of this nature online? I sent my email to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it on the 12th of March and to date have not had a response. I had a look at some other "adult" local online sites and found that the majority do not sell DVD's as they state it is illegal to do so.

So......I know the FPB received my email...I also know that Adult World is one of the largest companies of its kind in SA......I also know that it is in fact illegal to sell adult DVD's online....what I do not know is whether the FPB is pretending they did not see my email due to just being plain lazy and providing the same lame service other government departments do, or if they are ignoring me on purpose due to......a possible financial interest concerning Adult World? Or maybe they actually love porn and just need to save face in public when it becomes a topic....

I seriously doubt I will ever get an answer from them and I doubt Adult World gives a crap what the law says.....I for one don't care if you sell Porn or Midgets online, what I do care about is the double standards we come across when it concerns governing bodies and again I raise the question, who gives a minority the right to decide for us, especially when a ruling is not based on law, but rather on publicity.
