Just finished watching a live feed from the new iPad 3 announcement. I predict long queues soon at Apple stores around the globe. Unfortunately I won't be one of those. Not that the new iPad isn't exciting, but it is not enough of a mindshift to justify the expense of an upgrade.
There basically four main hardware updates. Retina display, faster processor, better camera and 4G capabilities. Not enough I think to justify an upgrade from iPad 2, but those of you with the original iPad should be getting out the folding chairs and joining the queue.
What for me is more exciting is the upgrade of some key apps like iMovie and iWork, the introduction of dictiation input capabilities and iPhoto for iPad. Hopefully they will be backward compatible and work on the iPad 2. I will definitely be shelling out the $4.99 for iPhoto if it is compatible as it looks amazing. I think the dictation capabilities require the new A5X processor, but it is a nice to have and not an essential.
For those of you wanting to get an iPad, but have budgetry constraints the iPad 2 will continue to be sold starting with a $100 price drop for the entry model. Hopefully those price cuts will be filtering down to the tip of Africa.
So that's it in a very small nutshell. I won't be getting the new iPad, but do I still want it? You bet your sweet little...
I think the new iPad can definitely replace PC's in households, as if the previous ones didn't! But with iLife and iWork suites added on, there really isn't a need for a PC anymore.
I don't see myself getting one though - I have the 1st generation iPad, which is so ancient now anyway, and I hardly use it. I see it as an entertainment device mainly, but between my Air and iPhone, there's no room for it.
Upgrades too quick?
Ever wonder if maybe the upgrade cycle is getting a little too fast? Sometimes I wonder about this. It's great and all but by the time we get one thing, the next big thing is on it's way.
Is the new version of iOS being released with iPad 3? Do you know? I imagine all new apps will be compatible with iPad 2 provided iPad 2 will be supported by the latest version of iOS which I'm pretty sure it will be.
