Don't expect a well written post as this is an emotional outburst.

As most of you know, Sasha Martinengo was fired from 5fm after 17 years. Oh...sorry? Right....I meant....he was let go as he did not fit in with the new line-up for the year ahead. According to station manager Aisha Mohamed: "The station however needs to evolve and change as our listeners do".

Well screw you!

I remember when 5fm (Radio 5) was about music. I remember Barney Simon giving us the absolute best in alternative music and every show would be about the latest alternative music and who was up to what in the world of alternative / rock.

There is not one mainstream radio station that has a dedicated alternative show. Every single show is just a blur of sound...from alternative, to hip-hop remakes through to some crap I can't even classify.

Let's take a look at Cape Town. We have our gangster stations like Good Hope and then the religious Lotus which really ONLY appeals to one group of people. We have KFM who uses the same play-list from 1980 (it's on repeat) and they just add one or two new songs every now and again to recycle for the next 30 years. The longer it's been on the play-list the more you get to hear it. Filled with morning DJ's that love the sound of their voice more than the music, KFM is the only station that has managed to instill feelings of guilt and sadness during the happy festive season with their dramatic Christmas Wish-list.

We have our Afrikaans channels like RSG etc. where "suiwer" Afrikaans is still spoken in single syllables....you know...for the hearing impaired....

We have 567 Cape Talk which has some great topics and when the DJ's are capable of shutting up you actually get to hear some interesting points of view. The DJ's on 567 obviously tried to take a hard-core no-nonsense interviewer approach and got so attached to their new persona they ended up evolving into a bunch of arrogant people more interested in listeners agreeing with them, than presenting various sides of a story.

Of course, we have 5fm. I am disappointed that every single show plays just about the same music. They no longer have different shows featuring different genres. You have to suffer through a bunch of of tunes that shamelessly f**cks up a classic with some "doofs". "grunt" and incomprehensibly fast ....speaking? Rapping? Singing? Every now and again you will be lucky enough to hear an original song that has a tune and maybe some words that make sense. The DJ's? Well Garreth used to be an ass, but once he grew up he became quite likable and I think he has a great team. I don't really listen to his show for the music, more for the entertainment value. The there is SASHA...I like him...when he started out he used to be just as arrogant and completely obsessed with tight skirts, but he has grown up and become a great DJ. Although he plays some good dance music, he plays a great variety of alternative as well during his show. We then have Grant and some other chick....uhm.....boring..moving on....then there is Fresh and his team, another great show. After hours 5fm becomes NOISE. Weekends are the WORST....we have to endure Thomas & KB (WTF put them on radio????) Especially Thomas who makes the weirdest noises on air and has the most irritating voice in the world!!!

So out of the 4 most popular stations in Cape Town, as of the end of March there will be a total of 2 DJ's worth listening to. Garreth & Fresh.

I read that some people felt Sasha spoke too much about F1....well at least he had a topic!!!! Not just some aimless show driven by promoting what the record labels says.

Enough of my rant. Seriously Aisha? You want to evolve and change the station as your listeners do, but do you know what your listeners want? Sure, it's easy to say that I speak for myself, but if that's the case then it seems that the immediate group of people I know are just like me.

Why can't we have more radio stations?? Why is this media also a monopoly? I would love to see Sasha, Barney, Ian F and a few other legends start their own radio station.....that would be something to see.....

Okay, I'm feeling better...bring on Nicki Minaj...if u have to....

SA Music radio

I remember feeling completely unimpressed with 5FM, even during prepschool. It was always though of as cool and desirable, I despised their self-declared fashionableness, and their "connection with the youth".

I grew up on East Coast Radio, and while the music was consistently bad, the conversations were good.

5FM doesn't even have that, too many egos trying to market themselves.

(Mr. Cliff was at Rhodes recently at some club launch, this became my #1 reason for not attending. The #2 reason was the terrible music).

Rock music? Try get a radio streamer for the BBC's late night shows. I think BBC 1 had a good one with Daniel P Carter!
