Hello fellow myDLers (I'm getting bored of this term, must find a new one)

I'm almost done with my final essay for this year, and thought I'd have one final bout of procrastination for old times' sake. This blog is the manifestation of that...

Lately, I've been entering competitions and thinking about all the cool tech there is out there, but shedding a silent nerd-tear for the fact that I'll never have them.

Why won't I ever have them you ask (in my head)? I don't have the money. I just don't. I tutored, I partook in medical trials and I saved up coins  - but I'm still just plain broke.

But that got me thinking - what if I could afford all these things? Or what if Reggie's Rush made a comeback and I could simply grab these things for free? What if Madonna mistook me for another African child and adopted me? What would I get?

Here's my wishlist:

An iPad 2 - because then I can have a garage band in my bag...who wouldn't want that?  I could also surf the web freely without having to squint to see a tiny screen. I could listen to music anywhere. I could feel like I lived in the future because touch screens are still super awesome in my mind.

A Netbook - because my iPad 2 would get stolen if I took it to too many placed. A netbook is super convenient and not too flashy. They're great for lecture notes. My incredibly slow writing speed during interviews would be exchanged for my relatively fast internet speed.

A real antivirus - because free versions just don't cut it. If I was rich/Madonna's child, I wouldn't care that I was buying products from the very people who pay to have viruses created and make the buying of their product necessary.

An SLR camera - because these things almost always turn you into a photographer. Anything looks great when taken from these cameras, and if you have even the slightest talent (I'm mildly competent), then awesome photos await you.

An iPod - because I wouldn't care that I was just paying for the brand and not looking for equivalents for cheaper prices. I could plug my iPod into my car and have solo-karaoke in traffic jams. I also wouldn't have to listen to the horrendous remixes which dominate the radio at night.

Microsoft Office 2010 - because I'm too stingy to pay for it now and continue to use the pre-installed half-assed versions of MS Word and Excel which Microsoft was too damn greedy to expand when creating Windows 7.

Ubuntu - I wouldn't buy Ubuntu. I would fund it. Then we could overthrow Microsoft and Apple with our freeware  and cloudware...Linux would also be made compatible with all games.

And finally...

A unicorn - cause hell, if you could afford to have things genetically engineered, you would get  freaking unicorn too. I would later create the unicorn-dragon...it would be the most epic creature to rule them all...

What would you wish for? (I assume the unicorn is a given)

Wait... never mind your wishlist (which is great and I hope you get everything your little heart covets). Far more intriguing is the things you've resorted to in order to try and fund it. Because, believe it or not, we actually have something in common! ME! Having something in common with the lovely Megg_Ellis! Who would've thunk it?

Somewhere on my CV, listed ever so subtly under "Miscellaneous", I ALSO have "Professional Medical Experiment"! YES! For realz! (Okay, so it's not on my CV exactly... but it was medical, it was experimental, and I got paid for my pain and trouble!) What'd YOU do? I'll tell you if you tell me!

Have you tried MS security essentials? it is a free anti virus that is not ~too~ bad. It does a good job of blocking malware and it doesnt slow your pc down much.

On another note: I want a kinect for christmas this year :)

On my one laptop I use Penicillin Titanium - provided free by ABSA to their internet banking clients. Seems to work fine. Other banks are also looking at providing free packages so it is worth watching.

On my second laptop I use MS security essentials and it also seems to be fine: have had no problems.

@Redsaid, it was a skin blanching trial :) going to try enter next year, it pays well

@Echoes, people don't realise how epic having a unicorn would be. And you'd never have to clean up after them, they poop rainbows. And who wouldn't want a rainbow in their yard?

@Riiaan I tried it for a while. Viruses love me like they love promiscuous teenagers. Can't escape them.

@sgb, I'm with Nedbank :/ and they only offer anti-phishing stuff.

Considering installing BitDefender

I think the tablet market has just about killed the netbook market. Although I agree there is a place for it, but everyone is just tablet struck.

I like the feel of actually typing and not just a touchscreen. I especially type much faster with a keyboard. Tablets require a lot of extra accessories to allow you to do the same. I would first get a netbook before a tablet, mainly for lectures. They're so expensive though, it's going to be a long time till I get one
