Ten years from now, when I'm bouncing a miniature humanoid android likeness of myself on my knee, I'll be telling him/her/it about 2011 as the last time tablets were only small round thingies you put in your mouth. In a few months expect them to be more fashionable than adopting underprivileged children or llama jokes.

The highlight of 2011 was the explosion of the iPad (someone call the Pretentious Police), the ineptitude of Blackberry (bad pricing Blackberry! Bad!), Amazon's tablet that turned out to be a kindle pumped full of multi-vitamins and the forking of Android into a few fun flavours.

Android is the biggest news from that list this year. They've gained tons of traction in the tablet market without even trying. Android is finally where it belongs, punching it's weight against the child proof container that is iOS.

Just what the doctor ordered

Looking at the lay of the land now that the dust has settled on 12 months during which more tablets have shipped since someone left some bread out and gifted the world penicillin. Tablet penetration spiking, marks the beginning of our journey into the cloud. Devices are becoming thinner and richer. The tablet wars have just begun. Unlike the iPhone the competition in the tablet space will not shrink into the distance. Android's brought their A-game and all this forking goodness means that there's more than enough resources to make 2012 Android Tablet growth a bitter pill for Apple to swallow.
