I was watching Oprah’s gadget guy going on about the Apple Ipad the other day, acting like a wireless flat screen pc had not been created before. As great as the features themselves are, I find the actual tablet impractical, and besides the digital book function, chances are, I will never buy one.
I touch type, and the feel of the mouse fits into my hand like air in my lungs. I only like to hold popcorn when I watch a movie, and if I need some quick online information, I use my phone. I understand that I could carry a tablet around with more ease, but I would rather go for a Netbook, so that my screen has more protection. Sure you can put you tablet in a silly keyboard dock, but then why not buy a lap top.
From a digital book perspective, I would use a Kindle. It is cheaper than a tablet, and it feels more like a book.
So my overall vote is ditch the tablet competition. Whether it is Apple iPad or Blackberry PlayBook, both bore me. I would not throw it away if I got it for free, but I would rather save up for a decent smart phone, and a top of the range Notebook.
Perhaps my views on tablets will change, but for now, they are a nuisance, and a gimmick.
play with a Tablet PC and you may change your mind. It is so natural to write and touch the screen that I had to put a Touchscreen PC (desktop) in my office. Tablet PC's offer the best of both worlds.
I feel mostly the same way. I have a phone to call, a digital camera for pics, a PC and a laptop etc, everything that's been reduced and squeezed into that tablet but on a better/bigger scale with better performance. The only real reason I looked at tablets myself was as an ebook reader. The Kindle's way too expensive still though. All I really want/need is a A5 sized plastic sliver even with a non-touch-sensitive and not-requiring-HD display that will display one of a couple of dozen PDF or word ebooks from a memory card. Doesn't even need wifi or 3G, connecting a USB cable to load books is fine. THAT shouldn't cost an arm and a leg...
