Electromode Music and G Management presents…

Blind Date
This exciting, brand new Afrikaans band was formed by four Afrikaans Idols competition participants whose aim is to take commercial Afrikaans music into a new direction. Lario, Emile, Lizaan and Christiaan met each other during the Idols competition, stayed in touch, and decided that they want to tackle an Afrikaans music project, seeing that their musical styles are very complementary… and so, Blind Date was born. Herewith some individual background information about these four phenomenal musicians:

Is Blind Date different?

All four members of this group believe that the outcome of a competition not necessarily dictate whether a participant will succeed as solo artist. Looking at some of the participants of Idols who have accomplished success as artists, although they were not the winner of the competition, illustrates clearly that it is more about hard work and talent: two elements Lario, Emile, Lizaan and Christiaan have in abundance!

These four young musicians came together to define what is important to them: positive, upbeat music that makes the feet itch, while succeeding in establishing a new standard in musical quality, yet still keeping true to Afrikaans culture. The group aim to break stereotypes that many perceive this young Afrikaans generation as – by creating a balance between the respect for the traditions that they have grown up with, while embracing a liberal, fresh approach to life, and especially to music; music they enjoy to make; music that will inspire and entertain young and old alike.

All the tracks on their album, entitled “Afrikaners is Plesierig”, are songs that these four, and countless other South African children, grew up with, songs that inspired them to be musicians, songs that are proudly South African and more importantly, proudly Afrikaans. Blind Date decided to honour the amazing artists before them that developed their love for Afrikaans music. Hits by Bles Bridges, Sonja Herholdt, Worsie Visser, André Schwartz and more recent stars like Karen Zoid and Dozi, to name a few, has been revitalized in a way it has never done before. A fresh sound that will entertain a wide spectrum of Afrikaans and non-Afrikaans speaking fans. Expect quality entertainment that does not just scratch the surface – expect big things for Blind Date’sfuture!

BLIND DATE ARE:

LIZAAN VERMEULEN
CHRISTIAAN KRITZINGER
LARIO MARX
EMILE WELMAN

A “world-first”, as the “world’s fastest” DVD RW drive combines both SATA and Lightscribe technology.
Rectron has launched the Lite-On DH-20A1L DVD drive, which it describes as not only the world’s first, but also the world’s fastest, DVD RW drive to combine both LightScribe technology and a serial ATA (SATA) interface in one complete unit.
Werner Joubert, storage business manager, Rectron, explains that the revolutionary new Lite-on DVD RW drive is the brainchild of Philips & Lite-On Digital Solutions (PLDS), the joint venture between Philips and Lite-On responsible for the Lite-On branded optical disc drive (ODD) business.
“LightScribe technology and SATA interfaces have already been introduced on DVD drives,” he says. “There are 20X Lite‑On drives currently available in the market with either SATA connectivity or LightScribe technology, but thus far none have combined these two indispensible and much sought-after features. Now, Lite-On has successfully merged both technologies in the new DH-20A1L, making it a very complete DVD RW writer.”
For creative, professional users
Joubert explains that creative and professional users will particularly appreciate the LightScribe functionality.
“Using the same laser that burns the data, LightScribe is a disc-labeling technology that allows users to burn a custom-made label on a disc, giving discs a creative and professional look,” he explains.
“And for advanced computer enthusiasts, the combination of a 20X DVD writer with a SATA connection results in significant performance improvements compared to the parallel ATA (PATA) you find on most current DVD writers. The SATA connection eliminates potential information and performance bottlenecking by offering speedy data transfer rates of at least 150 MB/s.”
20X speeds
Like all Lite-On 20X DVD writers, the DH-20A1L incorporates Lite-On’s own SmartWrite technology, which can boost writing speeds up to 20X on certain media, faster than the traditional 16X speed limit.
“Besides overspeeding to the highest possible writing speed, SmartWrite technology is also prized for its quality improvements to low-quality media,” says Joubert. “It optimises the writing strategy for unknown media brands in order to get the highest quality-results possible.”
Further underscoring Lite-On’s leading-edge approach to the optical disk market, Joubert said the company also markets a PATA drive capable of 20X speeds. “The Lite-On LH-20A1P is the first PATA 20X DVD RW in the world,” he says. “It is also the first in the world to have LightScribe technology.”
The Lite-On DH-20A1L DVD drive is available from leading retailers at the recommended retail price of R299.

Media Release: Incompatibilities cited as HP and Rectron part ways
“Two businesses growing in completely different directions” -- Zandre Rudolph, Rectron sales director
After a five-year relationship, HP South Africa and Rectron, the local information technology (IT) and consumer electronics distribution powerhouse, have parted ways.
With R1, 4 billion in revenues in 2007 and having just completed a R29-million revamp of its Midrand head office, Rectron distributes such leading global brand names as Intel, Microsoft, Toshiba, Gigabyte, Logitech, Panasonic, Sony, and LG. The company employs 350 personnel and has been named one of South Africa’s “Best Companies to Work For” (Corporate Research Foundation 2005/2006/2007).
Besides being Microsoft’s Distributor of the Year in 2005 and 2006, it received Intel awards for outstanding achievements in 2006 and 2007. Last year, Computer Reseller News (CRN) recognised Rectron as a Distributor of the Year in its 2007 Outlook Awards, an accolade that adds to a succession of key CRN awards every year from 2003 to 2007.
One-stop shop
Zandre Rudolph, Rectron sales director, describes the end of the relationship between HP and Rectron as amicable, but reports it is the result of an increasingly incompatible fit between the two companies over recent times.
“In the five years of working with HP, we’ve given our full commitment to the HP brand, and the company has been key to Rectron’s growth,”  he added. “But in recent months it became more and more clear that Rectron’s business model is incompatible with HP’s business model.”
According to Rudolph, as a “one-stop shop”, which focuses on providing its customer base with a complete solution, Rectron is today the biggest components distributor in southern Africa, dealing with small to medium businesses (SMBs), channel retailers, value-added resellers (VARs) and systems builders.
“Rectron’s focus is on product quality and service, providing resellers and their clients a wide range of products at the right price point, as well as the freedom to choose from top-quality brands,” he states.

Only one slice

Despite its “one-stop shop” strategy, Rectron has only had access to one slice of the vast HP product portfolio: the HP range of printers.

“Since it would have gone against our business model to become a complete HP house – distributing mainly HP products -- we were not granted access to any other HP products, including the lucrative printer consumables segment,” Rudolph explains. “It is therefore quite clear that our two businesses are growing in completely different directions.”

Rudolph also points out that the situation has been exacerbated by the fact that HP deals directly in the retail environment. This runs contrary to Rectron’s indirect sales model, which sees it exclusively marketing and selling through its 5 000 resellers.

“Our core customers just can’t compete with these retailers, especially when the latter receive special deals and pricing from HP that we can’t provide,” he states.

“Going forward, we are currently working in establishing ties with other leading printer vendors. Our major concern is ensuring that we offer our clients a complete solution, with the highest levels of top‑quality after-sales service and support.”

Rudolph also emphasises that Rectron is looking at a potential printer product portfolio that will close the gap to enable it to maintain its winning momentum as a “one-stop shop”.

“If that means going with two vendors, that’s what we will do,” he stated. “Meanwhile, we want to emphasise that there is no bitterness in the break-up with HP, and we wish the new distributor the best of luck going forward.”
