One of my aunts turned 50 over the weekend, she's half a centry old. Given that our average life expectancy in mzanis is harbouring arounf the early 30's and our median age is 16. You could say she is in an elite club. Cause many of us , do not live to see 50 nevermind 40 these days. But yet in our materialistic and ever so hedonistic society ,youth is still the be all and end all, people still shun the big 5.0.

I remember I used to have friends who'd say they rather die than see themselves all wrinkled up and stuff. Then I look at my aunt , my mother and one of my uncles who have crossed the 50 thrsshold.Although they may not be as skinny as they used to be, or their skin as elastic as when I was 10 , or their eyes filled with energy and sparkle they once carried. They still enjoy life to the max, age has helped to see different times, fashion, characters and situation. It has helped them appreciate the value of certain thngs like a spouse, kids, family and life itself. They are rich from some life experiences and poorer in some, but there's one thing they agree on.Being old is a blessing.

Being able to see your kids grow, being able to see your own grandkids move from babies to full grown adults with their own quirks is amazing. The gift of life is precious ,second only to the gift of salvation, cause in this world we only live once and the more one can squeeze into that life makes it more richer. If you think that from a million other beings that could have been, you sprung up, it's mind boggling. So I hope the Lord preserves me beyond 50 and beyond,it would be nice to sit around the table with my own grand kids and tell them stories like my grandmother did.To see the fashions change only to come back to what was there before, to see new technological advances,to see my own kids fall and rise but above all to grow old with my precious spouse, hopefully to take tat long rest once one is very very grey.

A police officer and two passengers were wounded last night when a taxi shot up two BRT buses in two different incidences. Now ,as awfull as it is, I was expecting this. The taxi industry is run by maffias, gangs and hoodlums with no respect for the law and the value of human life.If they don't mind shooting at each other ,whats stopping them from hurting the general public and using intimidation so that there's never ever an alternative to the dreaded coffin with wheels that is the sa taxi system.

Our government is failing us when it comes in cleaning up this sector that is used by the public that votes them into power year in and year out.The public is also failing itself by not taking a stand against these maffias and saying "never again". Why aren't we boycotting these death traps? I gues not having your own transport and lack of co-ordination is to blame for this. But how long shall we be plagued by these maffias?

Here is one case whereby the hype did not disappoint. District 9 made just over R2 million at the Mzansi box office over the weekend, and yesterday I saw why; the film has a good blend of humour, action, human tragedy and all the good tropes of sci-fi genre .But best of all it utilizes Jozi and the context of South Africa to make an engaging and heart wrenching tale, filled with great performances from the human and none-humans ( those “prawns” can act) , cool action (nothing beats seeing things get blown up areas you’ve been too), great characters and one of the few movies I’ve seen in a long time which I would love to see a sequel too.

Sharlto Copley who plays the main character of Wikus van der Merwe is brilliant. Espicially if you take into consideration that he ad lipped most of his lines. He is able to pull off both an endearing, charming and engaging character but also make him selfish,un-heroic and indifferent at times without making the audience stop caring for Wikus. The guys who played the different Prawns, especially pappa prawn and little kid prawn were very touching too. Actually the aliens are very convincing through and through. But the lines Sharlto come up with and his devotion to the wife ,really pulled off a great Im a bloke from boksburg  caught up in stuff I don’t understand very well type of character.

Yet it’s how Neil Blomkamp has captured the under belly of Jo’burg and our tropes as South Africans that I found very intriguing, aside from the story and the character. From the refernces to skop eating, slum life and our huge baggage of intolerance , violence and indifference to those who are different or less fortunate than us. If you think this film was shot during the Xeno attack and used apartheid as a spring board for it’s ideas around human –alien relation ,this film speaks primarily to our reality in more ways than one. When was the last time someone could say that about a winter blockbuster?

Yet the guys were very smart in  how this whole thing was handled. Although I agree with most people who say the story could have been set somewhere else and worked more or less the same way, cause some of the ideas are quite generic almost like The fly meets ET with a bit of gore. Yet I think setting it in Jozi just gave it that extra x-factor that American sci-fi don’t have.It gave it the realism, the other worldliness and the pleasure of us seeing our city and people on the big screen blowing things up.It gave the sci –fi genre the idea of using the 3rd world more for interesting stories to tell about humanity and it’s pitfalls.

This is a very cool movie, one of the best I’ve seen this year. The ideas in it may not be new, but it’s how the story is told, where it’s told and how it is presented that packs an extra punch. I do hope they make a sequel, I’ll be first in the queue, cause thereare some ideas and scenarios I would definitely love to see how they will pay them off.

Mr. P’s rating :
*****
Index
* wouldn’t touch it with a stick ** only if there’s nothing else *** Not that bad **** cool flick ***** instant classic

Being a white South African gurantees Refuge status in Canada

Heres one of the most bizarre and troubling stories I've read this whole week, courtesy of today's Times newspaper ; 31 year old Brandon Huntley of Cape Town has recieved refugee status in Canada because as  a white south african, he fears 'fear of persecution by 'African' South Africans". His lawyer claims theS A government does not do  much to protect white South Africa and that crime is being used as a tool against them. The guys claim to have been victim of crime, were they were tourtured and called names like white 'settlers' and 'white dogs', and the Canadians bought it.Granted the man refugee statusand saved him from us savage darkies.

Now I wonder if some guys were to break into my house and torture me and call me names and I was to apply for 'refugee status' based on that would it stick? I'm not saying we don't have a crime problem ,or that the BEE policy is fair far from it. But in the time were Gwede and Malema are crying for the race debate to be opened ,what do we make of such conduct? Is our government and black people out to get the white folks? Have we postponed the night of the long knives and shattered glass? Or given our imperfect state as a country some people are willing to sink to such lows to exit the country? Or do we need to look at how we can make our country more inclusive in form and function?

I personally feel the whole thing with the refugee status being awarded to this dude is just shameful. Shameful on him, cause he is going to give the world and the canadians a wrong impression of what South Africa is; I can see him having those atypical anti- south african conversation with his new canadian mates, about how you can't walk anywhere and you are perpertualy in a state of fear in the country and how the darkies just want to see some white blood on the floor. It does not matter that all our blood is red

It is also puts shame on us as a country that people could actually feel that this beautiful country is out to get them.Maybe we are not doing enough as a country to make South Africans see that we want them here and this is were they belong. But I'm tempted like I've said to one or two exes "if it was not meant to be it was not meant to be", don't let the door hityou on your way out. I wish him all the best in Canada though, when we host the world cup, or win the champions trophy ( I hope we do) ,do well in rugby ,athletics ,make inroads in reconciliaton and building of this country,he won't be a part of it.That's your loss. So when we are mugged, called names and insulted by taxi driver but we take the good and the bad.I understand why kenny and co made up that lets 'bomb canada' song, goody tissues making us look bad. It's aight,Enjoy Canada  Brandon!

Don't you just hate it when people avoid your calls, text messages, facebook messages ,phone calls etc. Espicially when they owe. The digital revolution has made it even more easier for such people to pull a Houdini on you. It used to be, a guy owes you some cash , you call them on the landline ,then they don't answer. You go over at the house at 8pm,when you know they are watching generations, so you can see the shadows duck and dive when you are at the door. There'll always be one who would yell out 'where are not here' ,then you go by the window and you shout " hey I can see you" then you get your cash back.

These days with high security fences ,giant distances that keep us apart and the illusion of connectivity and closeness the net has brought us,It's easy to wire money to people without having to deal with them face to face, or people miles away from you and so much harder to get it back.

The whole internet social networking thingy has really turned people into nasties. Even if a punk does not owe you jack you are not guaranteed that your email, wall post or text will be responded to.Even if it is urgent. It's like the world needs to learn a whole new ettiquite techniques when it comes to interacting with people on the web.It should be made a crime for people to not return calls from their debtor within a prescribed amount of time. Or maybe I should stop lending people money, who live to far from where I stay ,mmmmhhhh.....

Is death a gateway to heaven?

Recently I attended a memorial whereby the people were so sad stricken from the loss of their loved ones that they were consoling themselves with the idea that the guys are now in heaven looking down on us with their heavenly Father. Although I could understand the need to console oneself but I had one question bothering me, is death a gateway to heaven? Does God let us to be all miserable on this earth whilst the dead look upon us feeling sorry for us on high ? Whilst I understand there are many religions and understanding of death I tried to look at it from a protestant stand point. A stand point that uses the bible, and the bible alone to answer this question. So I do understand my conclusions may be different to those who use tradition, science or rational thinking but I think for those who believe in the Word ,it might be insightful.

So before we even go into the idea of death being a gateway to heaven let us define these two concepts first ; “death” and “heaven” .Romans 6:23 says death is the wages of sin. Ezekieal 18;4,23 also reaffirms that concept. For God told Adam and Eve that if they partake of the fruit they will die, in otherwords if they did hlisten to God’s word they will die. But that explains how death came about ,but how does the bible describe death? In John 11 : 11 -14 Christ compares death to sleep. When Lazarus had passed away he tells everyone that Lazarus is but asleep, the guys thought he meant it figuratively that he was not dead but he meant it literally that Lazarus was dead = sleep. Why does death = sleep will touch on that later on.1 Thessalonians 4 : 15,16

Then what is heaven? Heaven is a place where God is, a place of perfection. Isiah describes  Heaven as place where the blind will see, the lame shall walk ,were a man shall build and not another inhabit, were a man shall plant and not another reap. A place were the lions shall eat grass and walk side by side with the lamb.( Isiah 35 : 3-60, Isiah 65 :21 -23) .A place were Christ is busy preparing a place for us to stay (John 14:1-3), a place where Christ is working just like the high priest of old intercessing on our behalf ( Daniel 7;9,10 : Ecclesiastes 12: 13,14 ;Hebrews 7:24,25)

Now coming back to the idea that death is like sleep, what does the bible say on this concept. Those who are asleep are not aware of their surrounding, or even of themselves and they await a time when they shall wake. So it is with the dead. Daniel 12 : 2 says “ and many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt”. Paul puts the issue of death quiet plainly in 1 Thessalonians 4 : 13 -17 “ But I would not want you to be ignorant, concerning them that are asleep, that ye sorrow not as those who don’t have hope. For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, Even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord ,that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep. For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the trump of God : and the dead in Christ shall rise first”

So if the dead ,or those who are sleep, are awaiting the second coming of Christ, some to wake to everlasting joy by meeting him in the sky going heavenbound. Where is the consiousness of the dead now? Psalm 146 :3,4 says the very day the person dies ‘his thoughts perish”. The dead do not know anything, their love, hatred, envy is dead with them and have no say in what happens in the world of the living(Ecclesiastes 9;5,6), They don’t even praise the Lord! (Psalm 115:17)

So if the dead are not heaven praising the Lord then are the lost forever? Christ says “ I have come so that they might have life and life more abundantly John 10 :10. Those who die in Christ,or believe in him have the blest hope that on that great day when he comes for the second time, not as a lamb that takes away the sin of the world but as King of Kings and Lord of Lords, they will rise from dead and meet him in the clouds to go to be with him in heaven. (1 Thessalonians 4:14 -18). The deception of an eternal spirit or a life after death comes from Lucifer himself, for did he not tell Adam and Eve that they shall not “surely die”, whilst God has said the reward of sin is death. Shall we make God a liar? Let’s hold onto the free gift that God has given us,for in one man the world was condemned and in one man the world will be saved. What profited a man to have all the riches of the world and loose his soul. Let’s hold onto Christ , for his the way the trueth and the light and the only path to immortality and happiness. Let’s listen to His Word .

A short while I go I wrote about my short film and how I’ve been sending it to festivals and sorts. Well the first apple has kinda been bitten, on the 30th September 2009 my short film will be screened as part of “off the shelf” short film screenings hosted by Coal stove production. These screenings happen once a month , every last week /Sunday of every month. The films are selected by the guys at Coal Stove based on quality and aesthetics. The whole purpose of the screening, that take place in Jo’burg town, is to support budding filmmakers.

Most young and student filmmakers use the “Off the shelf” screening as away to break into the market, or get to show off their products that would be sitting at home because of lack of distribution. The screening include a Q & A session afterwards and they usually screen more than one film on the day. The damage is R20 . I’m still awaiting word on the venue .

So if you want to chat face to face or just want to check out the underground film scene in Jozi come through on the 30th .It’s going to be rockers ,see you then.I’ll keep you guys updated on the screening , for now you can check out the coal stove website : www.coalstove.co.za to find more about “off the shelf” or checkout our group on facebook ; love in a time of blackouts to watch the trailer , the epk or to get more on the actual short film. The epk and trailer are also available on you tube sweet.

Our South African based sci-fi took the 2nd spot in it's second week on release in the US due to a bunch of basterds, the Inglorious Basterds spawned by the one and only QT or Quinton Tarantino to most. Tarantino's sphaggetti western like World War 2 post modern farce raked in $ 37 million at the box office, to take number one spot leaving D9 to second position with $ 18 million dollars over the passed weekend.

Yet I have a feeling Neil Blomkamp and Peter Jackson will still be smiling cause if you combine this weekends total and last weekends earning the guys have already made over $ 26 million dollars in profit! Thats like almost an 80 % profit . Off only one country,so by the time the movie goes international they might make a 300 % profit. Thats major money people.

While QT's flick features a bunch of Amercan Jewish sodliers who go hunting for nazi's during world war 2 with stars such as  Bradd Pitt, Mike Meyers ,Eli Roth and Christopher Waltz on board, the films budget was quite big at $ 70 million. QT's flick is getting good reviews and is certified fresh on the tomatometer ,so it may stay on the number one spot for some time. But either way D9 is in the shoe in to make more money than Inglorious just based on production budgets alone.D9 was way cheaper to make, now lets get that Halo movie guys, cause Blomkamp has proven his mettle.

District 9 opens this friday in Mzansi.

In my interest of getting more cash, the legal and ethical way,I've decided on writing  a book.Yes,you heard me right. Mr.P is going to write a full on book, the way I see it if JR could do it,and yes there are probably 10 000 other JR's who didn't make it.But I have faith theres a market for my story too.Plus it's always been a fantasy to write  something one day ,book wise that is, theres no time like the present. If it all fails at least I would have tries

I've got a plot already, a basic idea of my characters and a titte name. What I will do is that I will publish snippets of the book every month on this day ( the 21st of each month) ,so as to keep me motivated and to see if it strikes a chord with the general public.

So here's the Skinny ;
Title : Ghetto Hero

Think : a cross between " the devil wears prada" meets " how to make enemies and alienate people" set in the SA tv industry

Story : Big ego's clash with small ego's on and off set, and in the editing room.A tell all tale by an editor of a very popular Reality show.Hosted by a Presenter with a gigantic ego,the charm of James Bond, the looks of Papa Action and the star power of Mandoza as he clashes with his young disillusioned editor.Who has a vendetta against the star. Why? You will have to read the book ...heehhehe

I'm loving it already. Now to start with page 1.... It's going to be tough but I am going to do this.sweet
