Have you ever wondered how authors choose the names of the characters in their books? Or where the movie moguls come up with the names of characters for the movies they produce? For instance if you are bored enough you can google the Twilight series and you will find that all the characters names were specially chosen on the meanings of the names. Bella (Beautiful), Edward (happy, prosperous), Alice (nobile kind), Casper (treasurer) and so I can go on. The fact that the author sat looking up meanings before she even got the book got me worried about the quality of the story.
Being a BUFFY the Vampire Slayer fan (must be why I am biased to Twilight) I found it interesting that the two main men in Buffy's life were both vampires (Angel and Spike) and both were named William before becoming Vampires. Now I hear a "Huh" in the background. Angel was called Liam before becoming Angelus, Liam is a derivitive of William. Spike was known as Willaim the Bloody (because of his Bloody aweful poetry) hence one girl two vampires both called William!
Then there are the names of characters in books. Being an avid reader I have often found the names in books interesting and often strange. Especially when the author tries to explain his choice of name to the reader in the book. Or you get such strange names in the book that you wonder how they ever thought them up.
The worst books I ever read for strange names was the Harry Potter series. The fact all the names (though not all the surnames) are actually old English names. A few are Welsh, Irish, Scottish and then there are the few old Druidish names. For instance Lunar Lovegood. Lunar was a popular Welsh name for Girls meaning daughter of the moon. Seamus, a very popular boys name (pronounced Shame-us). The strangest name in the series to me was Bellatrix! I loved the sound of that name yet she is of course the vilest of them all, besides Voldermort (another clever play on his name).
So have you ever wondered? Wondered where these people get these names? Or where your name came from? Perhaps I should try write a book and see if I can find some interesting names for my characters... I wonder if the names I come up with will reflect the characters personalities or if instead the personalities with refract the names instead...
