I realize that for practical reasons labels are neccesary. A doctor needs to know if you smoke or drink etc., but that was not the point I was trying to make.

Rereading my blog I realized that I made it sound more general than I intended to make it, so I will be more specific about it now. The labels I used in my previous blog were all supposed to be contradictory.

"You can't actually be a carnivorous vegetarian, try it. "

I know you can't, that was in a way my point. Labels limit people only when they aren't what they were labelled and then find themself stuck with the wrong label. Using the simple example of a vegetarian wanting to eat meat, but having to eat it while no one sees him because he fears their judgement. The guy is labeled a vegetarian whether he did it himself or not, and now he is expected to eat vegetables. It would take a lot of bravery to turn away from the label and change it to eating meat as well.

You can't believe in God and not believe in him, yet when you are born in a Christian family you are labeled a Christian too. If you are labeled a Christian falsely then you would probably be afraid to cast away that label as it is accepted as the right label to have by society.

In my blog I tried to label myself with contradicting labels, trying to show that these labels should not limit you and that it should not matter if you make unexpected choices or 'change your label' so to speak. People who are wrongly labeled are limited by them in the majority of cases, and this is how I think labels are limiting.

Of course we all have labels based on our behaviour, but we should not be limited by them, and be able to change them at will without any scorn or raised eyebrows from friends or society.

Life is a complex thing and with so many lives all over the world people often lose perspective of what is important. We have to help the homeless in Nigeria and just think of all the rape victims etc. etc.

The truth is that your life is merely a series of moments, stuck in rooms with people. What makes up your life and what happens in it, depends on who you are stuck in that room with at that moment, and what you do about it. Help the rape victim that comes to you, the one in front of you, talk to her and share the moment with her, because she is stuck in the room with you, not the people on the other side of the world. What matters is the people around you, the people you can influence, that is all that you can worry about. With communication today the room has gotten bigger, you can influence and partake in the lives of friends that live overseas, but keep it in perspective, you can't help the whole world.

Your life will become a long list of rooms that you were in, and one day you will think back, and wonder what effect you had on the people that were stuck with you in those rooms, and I truly hope that you will be able to say that the effect you had on them was a positive and lasting one. If I was stuck in a room with you, I would want you to think the same thing about me. Make the people in your rooms remember you, make the moments in these rooms happy ones. =]

Throughout the world there are names for every object out there, names that we made up to fit these objects, but the need for man to label things didn't stop there. We started labeling people and their behavior as well.

If you think about it though, is it possible that labels are taking away our individuality, and also limiting our possibilities?

If every person can be classified into a group then no one is really unique. If you eat only vegetables you are a vegetarian. Maybe if you really wanted to stand out and be recognized as unique you could go out eating other people, but then you would simply be another cannibal. Drinking excessively makes you an alcoholic and becoming too fat makes you another case of obesity.

Thinking about labels even further makes you realize that they can actually limit your behaviour. If you are labeled a Christian and you want to maintain the label, you can't go out drinking whenever you want because that would be unchristian like. If you want people to think that you are a vegetarian then you have to go eat some meat in your room alone if you suddenly get the urge for meat. Everyone that is labeled has certain things that are expected of them, and thus they are limited to an extent.

I want to get rid of those limits in my life, so I will label myself as everything. A religious atheist so that they can't tell me I can't get drunk, a straight gay guy so that I could admit loving a guy if it happened, a carnivorous vegetarian who eats whatever he wants, someone who wears expensive and cheap clothing, someone who hates all sport yet likes some sports, someone who uses his computer all the time but goes out to party with friends, an alcoholic with no drinking problem, a non smoker that likes to smoke. I want people to expect everything and anything from me, based on my personality. I don't want people to label everything I do. In the end there is only one label that sums it all up, one label that is good enough for me. I am Francois Archibald Nolte.
