Now that Eskom is out of the firing line, which is a pity, for the problem has not gone away, only padded, time for a different problem is at hand. The problem in question is that of police brutality.

Once again, religion has hit the big time on the Reporter.co.za site. The piece on religious tolerance being from Satan has got the tongues wagging. And more so from the ranks of the religious zealots who proclaim her piece as godsend; a true vindication of Christian beliefs.

Not that there is anything wrong with the exercise in freedom of expression. It’s the indictment behind the indictment that gets to me, but on the other hand, I agree with the article – Since when is religion democratic? In all beliefs, god is ruler supreme, period. There is no debate as to tolerance for other gods and or belief structures. He/she/it exists, rules and demands obeisance. The rest is pure human conversation or rationalisation.

Mandoza has done it again. And this time, two people are dead and him admitted to hospital. And as usual, the media are all over the hapless artist like proverbial flies, using inflammatory rhetoric in an effort to drive the masses to emotive conclusions.

In listening to the news this morning (Sunday 24/02/08,) I was astounded to hear how the Metro/Traffic Police treat their fellow citizens as it concerns them enacting so called ‘law enforcement’ processes. I speak of the huge road block around the Linksfield area/interchange.

The School Pledge: The Moral Justification

I guess that, given the numerous anti-pledge invocations that travelled cyber space, it was the next logical step. So now, instead of only reciting the school pledge, school kids will also have to recite the Bill of Responsibility.

I understand that its all in the hope of instilling values and morals in the school going generation, all in the expectation that they will grow up better citizens: ‘It is to say how we exercise rights, with the understanding that rights come with responsibility - Naledi Pandor.’

The use of emotive cajolery has been used to good effect through out the ages by those in power. In this case, what makes it even more effectual, is the fact that the bill was largely drawn up by the National Religious Leaders Forum. Two honourable emotive precepts in one package.

Although I understand the motivations behind both principles, I cannot ignore my instincts, which keep screaming at me rather loudly.

Maybe I should downplay my stance and just go with the flow, hoping for the best. Unfortunately, history has instilled in me a fear of grand- narratives, which prevents me from taking anything political at face value.

I sure that, in the end, the school pledge and the bill of responsibility will be accepted, and that the masses will go about their daily chores as is the habit: totally oblivious to the degree of indoctrination that their kids are being subjected too.

It is said that governments are a tool of man’s devising. Thus we only have ourselves to blame for its machinations.
