I was suprised to see a newsletter on a Thursday. Unfortunately my suprise turned to dismay to discover that the "newsletter" was actually an announcement of the closure of this site. Although I did not blog here with great regularity it was great to have somewhere to write about my love of gadgets and to read other like minded bloggers. It was never about the money. I think that in all the years I have blogged here I have earned about R300. Certainly not enough to give up my day job. Well, if I did have a day job that is. I am sure that most of you will feel the same. Thanks to those who kept things going in the background and i look forward to seeing you all on the other side. Ric

I was in the UK recently and was listening to one of the morning radio programmes while I was making my breakfast. The DJ was talking about her favourite CD and said “CDs were those little discs that came in those neat little plastic boxes”. She was joking of course, but I am sure that there is a generation now growing up that will never know the pleasure of physical media.

I am currently in the UK visiting family and friends and discovered that I am still in  awe of how technology has changed our lives. One hundred years ago I could not have travelled from Abu Dhabi to London in under 10 hours. Air travel has become so much a part of our lives that we are no longer amazed by it.

I still wonder at the marvels of modern science, like the Internet for example, which allows me to sit in the Mugg & Bean in Mushriff Mall, Abu Dhabi and write this blog post all the while sipping a Serious Cappuccino.  I realise that for most of my readers this is something they have grown up with and is no big deal for them. Using the Internet in a coffee shop that is, not sipping a Serious Cappuccino.

Steve Jobs famously said that he had "cracked the code" for the TV. Since then the Apple Rumour Mill has been champing at the bit waiting for Apple's next revolution. Now they seem to be running out of things to predict. I read the other day that the mongers are now debating what it will be called.

Please help me. Facebook have bought Instagram. Should I care? I went to download the app to see what the fuss was all about and discovered that I had already downloaded it some time ago. I either never tried it or wasn't impressed I can't remember which.

I realise that it will sound strange that an Apple Fan Old Fart will be rooting for Android to become the dominant smartphone operating system. The reason is very simple. I want iOS / Android to go the way of Mac OS / Windows.

Apple has laid the foundation for this to happen by making iOS a closed system the way Mac OS is. The only way you can get to either of Apple’s OS is to buy an Apple product. The only way to get iOS software is from the Apple App store.

A little while ago AlcorZA wrote a post about his 5 top iPad Apps. I was interested to see what he chose and whether it would coincide with my favourites. I was surprised to note that only one of his top 5 were on my top 5. Thinking about it though I realised that as much as each person is different so are their likes and dislikes in all spheres of life. You might like fish I like steak. You say tomato I... well you get my drift. So here is my top 5 and the challenge goes out to all you tablet and smartphone users to share your top 5. You could get us trying some new ones.
