|Google offers free global search course|
Tuesday, 10 July 2012 13:15
You might think that you are rather skilled at using the search engine Google effectively, but did you know that there is a specific way to look up the definition of a word so that you can get the answer immediately?
And did you know that you can use Google to track down the location of a picture that a friend took on that one vacation ages ago? The search engine giant is now offering users the opportunity to not only learn those tricks, but to become a certifiable searcher.
In an attempt to help users become better skilled at internet searchers, Google is launching a free, global online course starting today (Tuesday July 10, 2012). Called Power Searching with Google, the course will consist of six 50-minute long classes presented over the next two weeks, until July 19, 2012. Although the classes can be taken at users’ own leisure within the two week time period, the assessments that are due must be completed by specified deadlines. (Those deadlines are emailed to you once you register for the course.)
The classes will be filled with handy search strategies, tips and tricks to help users getting the most out of their internet searches. Those who take the course will be taught techniques on how to use Google to look up things more effectively and getting faster results in order to solve real, everyday problems. A range of interactive activities will allow users to practice their newly acquired skills. Students will also have the opportunity to connect with others on Google Groups, Google+ and Hangouts on Air.
At the end of the course, there will be an assessment, and those who pass it, will be emailed a printable Certificate of Completion.
You can register for the course here: http://www.google.com/insidesearch/landing/powersearching.html. Once you do, you will be required to sign in with your Gmail handle and password, and then provide your first name and surname (they’ll need it for when they issue your certificate at the end) and check a box on how you came to learn about the course.
Registration for the course is free and open until July 16, 2012. The first class will be released today and new classes will be made available Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday until July 19. All course-related activities will end on July 23, 2012.
