With winter rapidly approaching, a local technology company has joined in a heartwarming social media drive to donate blankets to less privileged South Africans.
Printacom Technologies, the authorised seller of OKI printers in South Africa, has announced that it too will be joining the nationwide and upcoming Twitter Blanket Drive.
This now annual event sprouted from a single tweet by an advertising executive whose Twitter handle is @melanieminnaar. In that tweet, which she wrote in 2010, she suggested that the South African Twitter users ("tweeps") donate blankets to charity, using the micro-blogging site to spread the word and the donations.
That year, the campaign raised over 700 blankets and last year, it raised over 2 700 blankets that were given to charitable organisations and distributed among the needy.
This year, the Protea Fire & Ice! Hotel in Melrose Arch (@ProteaHotels #fireandicema) will be hosting an official Twitter Blanket Drive (#TBD) open event on May 26th, 2012.
Printacom has already donated 500 blankets and has made a commitment to donate another blanket each time selected OKI printers are bought during May and June.
"It's a great campaign which allows ordinary people to participate and spread the word, while also setting down a challenge for corporate South Africa to rise to the occasion," says Neil Rom, MD of Printacom Technologies. As for using Twitter for the campaign, he says: "That makes this campaign all the more appealing. It is leveraging emerging technology platforms to rapidly reach across South Africa and stimulate community involvement. The end result is that the needy benefit from some much-required relief through the cold winter months."
The hotel will serve as a drop-off point for blankets and participants are encouraged to tweet pictures of their drop-off. The blankets that are donated that day will be given to Nkosi's Haven and Kitty & Puppy Haven.
To spread the word, Twitter users are encouraged to use the hashtag #TBDZA.
According to Anton Gillis, general manager of Fire & Ice! Protea Hotel, everyone who brings blankets to the hotel on May 26 will be given a milkshake. "Anyone who donates 250 blankets will be tweeted about on the night and will be on the screens at the event."
Members of the public can also donate new or used clothing. Collection points will be located nationwide at various places, including at Williams Hunt dealerships. To find out about events or drop off points near you, visit the official Twitter Blanket Drive website.
