A free video sharing app has reached the top of the downloading charts to become the most popular free app for iPhone.

Described as Instagram and Twitter for video, Viddy allows users to record short video clips of no more than 15 seconds in length and share it instantly with their social networking friends and followers by uploading it to their Facebook Timelines; or to Twitter, YouTube and Tumblr. According to the app’s creators, it will allow users to “turn everyday moments into perfect little movies.”

The Viddy app also allows users to tap into and unleash their inner James Cameron and George Lucas by enabling them to add special and advanced effects to their clips. These include vintage film styles and retro-style camera hues. You can even add advanced effects such as transitions and have a soundtrack by adding music to your clip. And just as with content on Facebook and Instagram, clips on Viddy can be tagged and people can leave comments on it.

Viddy’s success has sparked in recent months, thanks in part to launching its Facebook Timeline app in February. According to a report on tech blog TechCrunch, more than 1.7 million new users have signed up for the app, with an average of about 300 000 new users registering per day.

However, it hasn’t been all smooth sailing and success for Viddy. The app had a slight hitch earlier when it was banned from iTunes for a few days due to users posting provocative content such as nude or partially nude scenes of themselves or others.  Now it has a system in place that lets users flag inappropriate content.

Viddy can be downloaded from iTunes for free. It is compatible with iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad.
