Nokia Lumia 800 arrives in SA PDF Print E-mail

The first Nokia Windows phone has arrived in SA. The Lumia 800 goes on sale at Vodacom today, marking what Nokia hopes is “a new dawn” for the phone manufacturer in the local market.

The Lumia 800 is the flagship Nokia Windows phone and features the same design as the Nokia N9, but runs Microsoft's Windows 7.5 operating system.

With a 3.7-inch Amoled ClearBlack and 2.5D curved glass, the Lumia 800 has been widely praised for its design and display. The handset has a 1.4GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, 512MB RAM and 16GB internal memory.
The handset has an 8MP camera with Carl Zeiss optics, and what Nokia calls its “best social and Internet performance”, with deep social media integration and Internet Explorer 9. The Lumia 800 also has the Nokia Drive application, MixRadio (a free global music streaming service), and over 150 local apps.
The handset is available on a Vodacom Business Call contract for R279 per month, with 100MB data per month for 24 months. A special promotional offer is running at Vodacom World, in Midrand, where the first 200 customers to sign up for the deal will receive a free Xbox. Vodacom says the handset will be nationally available on 7 February.
New era?
Nokia's VP for South and East Africa, Gerard Brandjes, said at the launch event, at Vodacom World, on Wednesday: “With the launch of the Lumia range, we are showing our clear intent to set a new standard for smartphones. This is a giant step forward for our retail strategy in SA.”
Nokia's director of smart devices for Africa, Middle East and India, Tom Erskine, also emphasised the point, saying: “The partnership between Nokia, Microsoft and Vodacom marks a new era for smartphones in SA.
“With the aspirational Lumia 800 and the more affordable Lumia 710, we believe we have the right products to shake up the market.”
While the Lumia 800 caters for high-end users, Nokia will also introduce the Lumia 710 to SA in the second quarter. The handset has a changeable back cover, a 5MP camera, 1.4GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, 512MB RAM and 8GB internal user memory.
