Review: VKOM 401W 3G WiFi Modem Router PDF Print E-mail

The VKOM401 is a portable 3G Wi-Fi Modem Router. Once you insert a 3G card into the device, it creates a personal WiFi hotspot that lets you connect multiple devices.

Ease of use
Even the not so tech-savvy individual will find it fairly simple to set-up. There's no pesky CDs to install before you can use it and even better, there are no wires to connect or get tangled.
All you do is switch it on and you're off! For beginners like me, all I had to do was follow the simple step-by-step instructions in the quick-start guide and the modem was my new Wi-Fi hotspot. A charger is included in the box.
Test run
I tested it using my laptop and two Android phones (HTC Desire HD and HTC Wildfire) and a Nokia 5800.
With regards to speed, it was very fast, both uploading and downloading. Using a Cell C SIM card, I got speeds of 100kbps download and 40kbps upload. File transferring was much faster at about 3-4Mbps.
When the modem is fully charged, the battery should give you just more than 4 hours.
Between 5 walls and a distance of about 50-meters, I could still pick up 100% signal from the device.
The Wi-Fi modem is sleek, smaller than a cellphone, which makes it light and easy to carry around. It makes an ideal add-on for a WiFi only device like an iPad. It has 4 LED indicators on the front panel, which displays signal strength, network, power and WiFi.
I was concerned about security, but was able to access the configuration panel thanks to the quick-start guide and easily set-up a password for the wireless network which took about 30 seconds to complete.
If you're looking for a portable 3G modem/router that you can carry around in your pocket, the VKOM 401 is ideal.
