South Africa to ban porn? PDF Print E-mail

Malusi Gigab All forms of pornography should be banned in South Africa, says Deputy Minister of Home Affairs, Malusi Gigab.

Gigab has asked the Law Reform Commission of South Africa to consider placing a ban on television, mobile phone, and the web pornography and the Justice Alliance for South Africa (JASA) to draft a bill on the issue.

The ban would be implemented by means of filters (such as those in place in China) restricting net access and put in place by service providers.

Says the bill, "Any Internet service provider or Mobile phone service provider who distributes, or allows to be distributed through the Internet or through a mobile phone in the Republic of South Africa, any pornography, shall be guilty of an offence and liable, upon conviction, to a fine or imprisonment for a period not exceeding five years, or to both a fine and such imprisonment."

The bill calls on our Films and Publications Act that describes child pornography as illegal, and requests that term be ammended to simply "pornography".

Nanny state

Gigab's bill justifies itself by saying that pornography is harmful to children and demeaning to women, infringing on their constitutional rights. The objective of the bill is "To protect children from pornography, and to protect women from the indignity of being seen by children as objects of pornography"

Clearly Gigab believes this is the job of the government and not to be left to the parents of our country. Gigab is quoted by the BBC as saying "Cars are already provided with brakes and seatbelts... There is no reason why the internet should be provided without the necessary restrictive mechanisms built into it."

A good point. If you're a dictator.

Bad news if you think you'll be able to get away from this bill outside of the country, it includes a clause stating you are still accountable as long as you're a citizen or permanent resident of SA - wherever you are.

Big brother is watching.

The beginning of the suppression of the media since who classifies what as "porn"? Those "special" MMS groups that advertise on E-TV's late-late shows are going to die, the cell providers will lose stacks of dough and all that happens is it will go underground and in that way get worse than it is now.

Yes to banning kiddy porn, no to government control (well, do they actually have control/management/accountability of anything state-run? besides managhing to dip their hands in the cashflow?)
yes to shooting anyone that uses/makes porn that forces or hurts anyone but most (open to correction) porn is made by willing participants and bought/used/views by consenting adults.

Parents should also take more control of their kids's access to porn and even just plain life in general.

I feel that it just going to far in this country.Everything is forbidden. How about implementing a 18 year age restriction for the 19h00 news. Our kids learn how to toe-toe, stike, not to work. Yes it's ok to kill, because for a R1000 bail, or a bribe everyone feels fine. Now they are worried about PORN! This is just a distraction of our real problems.
OH, SA Government get a life!
