iPads not welcomed in Israel PDF Print E-mail

NoiPadNo Apple iPad owners travelling to Israel will no longer be able to take them into the country until the country’s Communication Ministry lifts a ban implemented yesterday.

iPads are being confiscated by customs officials at all international airports and placed in storage until tourists return to their own countries again.

The reason for this lies with the WiFi connectivity on the device.

During testing in Israel, engineers found that the broadcasting powers levels of the iPad is not in compliance with Israeli wireless networks.  The iPad’s WiFi modem is developed to operate at a level for the United States as to where Israel operates on a lower level similar to that of Europe.

Confiscated iPads are currently being stored in a warehouse and owners are being charged a daily rate until the ministry declares its (broadcasting power) suitable.

Apple today also announced that the international release date of the iPad has been delayed with a month and are claiming shortage of stock to be the reason.  With 500 000 units shifted within the first week in the US, demand was stronger than expected by the company.

This might be good news for Israelis looking to purchase units within Israel as it might allow for time to process the current compatibility issues raise by their Communications Ministry.
