Google To Launch Its Own Netbook? PDF Print E-mail
If early rumours are to be believed, your holiday gifts next year could include a Google branded netbook running on the company’s Chrome OS (operating system).

Hot on the heels of the speculation that Google might soon be selling its own smartphone, called the Nexus One, several reputable tech and gadget bloggers have latched onto the rumours that Google is working closely with an unnamed manufacturer to produce its own, Google-branded netbook. As Gadget Venue points out, this will allow Google to get a Chrome OS netbook running with the exact specifications they want rather than with the specs other manufacturers want.

The bloggers at TechCrunch report that multiple sources have already indicated that Google has been in talks with at least one hardware manufacturer about building a netbook especially for Google to run on its Chrome OS, and that the company has even provided the unnamed manufacturer with detailed technical specifications and a Request for Proposal.

Details are obviously still sketchy at this stage, with no sure specs available except for one – which Techcrunch calls “the only firm tech spec” – that the device will be mobile enabled.

This lack of concrete details is not preventing Techcrunch from going out on a limb and making educated guesses about the Google netbook’s specs. They suspect that Google will bypass the Intel Atom processors – the current leader in netbooks – in favour of an ARM CPU, and that Google “may very well be targeting Nvidia’s Tegra line” since it outperforms Atom in every way and uses a fraction of the power.

Apparently Google is in no particular hurry to bestow its netbook onto the world. The targeted launch date for the Google netbook is apparently set for around the final quarter of 2010, which will make it just in time for the holiday gift buying season.
