OWL Keeps An Eye On Electricity Usage PDF Print E-mail

South Africans are still in the dark about whether or not Eskom will implement severe tariff hikes, but now there is a device on the market which will empower consumers to keep track of their electricity usage and costs.

In a recent article in the Business Report newspaper, a local economist revealed that electricity in South Africa is already more expensive than in the United States, Israel and Mexico. If the country’s power monopoly Eskom goes ahead with its plans to push up tariffs by 45% every year for the next three years, South Africa will have the most expensive electricity in the world.

Owl Electricity MonitorThe OWL Wireless Electricity Monitor could provide local cash conscious consumers with a glimmer of hope. The device, which is supported by the Energy Council of South Africa, features a cumulative memory feature, providing you with up to the second information about the exact amount of electricity your household is using along with just how much it is costing you. This knowledge will help consumers to determine how switching off lights and plugs can save them money. If you care about the environment too, you’ll be happy to know that the OWL even displays your household’s carbon footprint.

The OWL consists of a display monitor, a transmitter and a standard sensor. It easily connects to your mains electricity supply. In fact, installation is said to be so easy, there will be no need to hire an electrician to set up the device for you.

The OWL will not suck up even more of your household’s electricity. The device is powered with six AA batteries – both rechargeable and disposable batteries can be used – with three batteries used in the transmitter and three in the display. The display can be operated from a mains adaptor instead. If batteries are used in the display, it could last between eight and 13 months. In the transmitter, standard alkaline batteries will last more than 12 months, with high performance cell batteries lasting even longer than 24 months.

The OWL is available in South Africa at various retailers, including Builders Warehouse and Builders Express, for the recommended price of R899.00 for the Single Phase device, and R1 149.00 for the 3 Phase.
