All the green thumbs out there need not turn blue at the prospect of leaving their beloved gardens this coming holiday season, because there is a gadget that will allow them to keep a constant eye on their precious summer blooms from anywhere in the world.
The GardenWatchCam, manufactured by Brinno, is a weather resistant, 1.3 Megapixel , time lapse camera designed to be placed outside, in the garden, to take photos of your flowers, lawn, bird feeder or any other spot in your garden at predetermined time intervals. The images are saved in JPEG format and can then be played back easily on a computer as an AVI horticultural home-movie. An entire day's footage will be seen in just a few moments. Watching grass grow has never been so much fun!
In order to keep an eye over their plants at all times, users can choose between seven different time settings. The first six options - one minute, five minutes, 30 minutes, one hour, four hours, 24 hours - can be set by opening the camera and turning the switch to the preferred time. The seventh customised time option is set by inserting the included 2 GB USB flash drive into the camera to download the Brinno software onto it. Users must then insert the flash drive into their computers and follow the instructions on screen to customise any other time setting at which they would like the GardenWatchCam to take photos. Users can even elect to include date and time stamps on their images.
You'll be able to really zoom into your bloom with the GardenWatchCam's lens, which is adjustable from 20 inches (50.8 centimetres) for close-ups, to infinity. Between shots, the camera enters sleep mode and turns off when it gets too dark, which means that the four AA batteries could last for up to six months - depending on how often you set it to snap a picture, of course.
Although the GardenWatchCam can be mounted on a tripod, it includes a specially designed mounting stake that sticks into the ground. The stake is flexible and can be adjusted to position the camera and place it at the desired angle.
The GardenWatchCam is available from South African online retailer Have2Have for R1 749.13.
